Ansel Adams famously said that “A great photograph is one that fully expresses what one feels, in the deepest sense, about what is being photographed”, a feeling echoed by Alfred Stieglitz who claimed that “Every photograph has an equivalent idea or emotion attached to it”. It is the most obvious start when talking about Live Photography.
Live performances exude fleeting moments of intensity, emotions and electric energy that passes from the artist to the audience. The role of a photographer in this context is to capture not only faithful images of the act on stage but also images that truly encapsulate the inimitable magic at work.
Be it in the smallest club or the largest venue in Scotland, I make it my mission to immortalise the split second where the light is drenched with the energy in the room.
Although challenging due to the overall darkness and ever-changing lighting, Live Photography (be it music, dance or theatre) is one of the most rewarding types of photography there is; where different art forms collide and speak to each other.
